September 5

Seniors – Come to the main office today after school to vote on powder puff shirt design.

MHS Youth and Government will meet Tuesday (9/9) of Sept. in Mr. Browns room (B-14) from 3:15-4:00. 

MHS History Club will meet Wednesday the 10th of Sept. in Mr. Brown's room (B-14) from 3:15-4:00. 

Progress reports will be sent home with your student on Friday (9/12). 
Don’t forget the Junior/Senior dress sale tonight (9/5) from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm and tomorrow (9/6) from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. 

Don’t forget that Meghan O’Leary will be here to tell you how you can become a lifeguard today (9/5) during ELP in the auditorium.   You should only attend if you are interested in working as a life guard. 

Carruthers PTO will be working on the landscaping tomorrow (9/6) morning at 8:30.  Any Beta interested in earning service points can bring a shovel (if you have one) and come to the front of

Carruthers.  They will reschedule if it is pouring rain.

There will be Junior class powder puff practice on Tuesday (9/9) at 6:00 pm at Longfellow Park.  You must have a permission slip and pack page of handbook signed and turned in and a current physical on file before you can practice.

The first meeting for FBLA will be tomorrow (8/26) at 7:45 in Ms. Scott’s room (C21)

There is a freshman meeting today during ELP in the auditorium.  Sophomores will meet on Tuesday, Juniors on Wednesday and Seniors on Friday.  All meetings will be held in the library. 

Many students are having trouble with locker jams.  The only way to fix this is to make sure that nothing is blocking the upper and lower latches on the left side of your locker.  If  ANYTHING is near or past that…your locker will jam.

The first National Honor Society meeting will be on Thursday (10/23) at 8:00 am in room A-70.  Check to see if you’re on the list outside Ms. Morris’ room.  If your name is on the list, please attend.

Beginning Monday, October 6 the library will be closed to students who have lunch. Teachers and their classes are being disrupted by the noise and behavior of the lunch crowd. If you have an assignment you would like to work on during lunch, you may get a pass from me before school, and you will be required to sign in on the log sheet at the circulation desk. Passes will be limited to a manageable number, and students not being quiet and productive will be told to leave and will not receive passes in the future.      

If you couldn’t make it to Wednesday night’s meeting but are planning to be in the club, it is very important that you stop by the Key Club office this morning.

Today is the last day to order shirts for the "gold out" volleyball game to raise awareness for childhood cancer - only $10 with the proceeds going to "Friends of Kids with Cancer" Organization. There will also be a gift card drive along with a toy drive that will have a box that will be at the high school to drop in any toy donations (toys must be new and in original package). The team is also selling raffle tickets for a gold volleyball. Winner will be drawn at the game.  Please consider ordering a shirt, donating a toy, buying raffle tickets, and attending the game!

Are you up to a little friendly competition with Carterville this Friday?  Here’s how it works…WSIL is running the “Sack hunger” competition.  They will donate $500 to the Murphysboro Food Pantry in the name of the school that wins with the most cans collected.  Cash donations may also be made and will be counted as canned goods.  The winner will be announced at the game.  If we win, we will be the 1st EVER visiting team to beat the home team!  If you are not going to the game Friday, bring your cans to the main office and we will be sure to get them there.  Can we beat Carterville?  Go Devils!!!

Girl’s basketball tryouts will begin Monday (11/3) at 3:30 in the gym.

Students – don’t forget Friday there will be a costume contest with winners announced at the pep rally.  Signs are posted around the building with the rules and you can also ask your ELP teacher for the rules too.  Let’s have fun, but be appropriate!

The Murphysboro High School "Crimson Express" completed their 25th Anniversary Competition season at Pinckneyville this past Saturday.   The Band received Best Percussion, Best Soloist and 1st Place in Class AA.  The Band received 1st place in their class in every competition entered this season.  Great job!

The Murphysboro Devil Bots competed very well last weekend at the Southern Illinois Skyrise Tournament. The team ranked 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 17th, won the tournament, and received two tournament finalist. The total team won the tournament Sportsmanship Award by displaying Murphy Pride while also shutting out Carbondale during the tournament finals. Wish the team luck this week as they head to Missouri to face tough competition for a State Championship on Saturday.

It's time for the Class Penny Wars!  Donate your loose change during lunch to help your class win money for your Prom/SeniorFest account.  Also, the winning class reps will get to put a pie in the face of the losing class reps during halftime at the Faculty vs. Seniors basketball game next Friday, March 6.  All proceeds will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  See a Beta member for more info.  

Applications are due THIS FRIDAY for any student who received an invitation to join the Beta Club.  Because of the recent cancellations, the deadline for your dues has been extended to next Friday, March 6; however, the applications still need to be turned in to Ms. Goode by THIS FRIDAY.  See her for more info.

Congratulations to Key Club for being awarded first place trophies in all four major categories at the Illinois Eastern Iowa District Convention in the Chicago area this past weekend.  This is out of about 200 clubs in the district.

The Murphysboro Devil Bots Competed very well at the Missouri Championship this past weekend. During the tournament the team won the Design Award Qualifying them for the VEX World Championship. One of the robots also went undefeated during the qualifying rounds only losing to the number four ranked team in the world by less than 10 points in the semi finals. The team also won the build award.

Thank you so much to all students and staff who helped collect lids for the daycare plastic bench. All together, we collected 127 lbs!! It will take 400 lbs to make the bench, but we put a HUGE dent in it!!

When I gave Abby the last pile and told her that we were done collecting for the year, she said that we collected more than anyone else she was receiving lids from. She told me to tell you all, "Thank you, 

There is a meeting for all summer workers today from 3:30 – 4:30 in the Health room.

Anyone going on the Key Club and Beta Club 6 Flags trip next Monday should be at the high school by 8:15 AM. We plan to return by 9 PM.

Students who are taking Honors English 11 next year need to see Mr. White this week to pick up their summer assignments.
